Step 1: Hardware Compatibility Check

Navigate to your device's Settings. iPhone: Settings → General → About — look for "Available SIM" entries. Android: Settings → Network → SIM Cards → Add eSIM. The presence of an "Add eSIM" option confirms hardware support. If absent, your device does not support eSIM.

Step 2: Carrier Unlock Verification

A carrier-locked device will reject a third-party eSIM. UK contract phones from EE, Vodafone, O2, or Three may be locked. Request an unlock from your provider — typically free after the minimum contract period, processed within 1–3 business days.

Step 3: Airalo Account Setup

Download the Airalo app (iOS/Android) or visit airalo.com. Register with your email address. Verify via the confirmation email. Complete your profile. UK users: plans are priced in USD — factor in currency conversion when budgeting.

Step 4: Plan Research and Selection

Search for your destination. Review local, regional, and global options. For each plan, check: data allowance, validity period and start conditions, top-up availability, hotspot permission, and country list (for regional plans). Compare at least two plans before deciding.

Step 5: Purchase and QR Code Backup

Complete purchase via card or Airmoney. QR code delivered to email instantly. Screenshot immediately and store in cloud-accessible location. Also accessible in Airalo app under "My eSIMs".

Step 6: eSIM Installation

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → Use QR Code. Scan, confirm, label the plan. Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM → Scan. Requires Wi-Fi — do at home before travel.

Step 7: Data Configuration

Set Airalo eSIM as data line. Enable Data Roaming on Airalo line. Keep UK SIM for calls and SMS. Test by briefly disabling Wi-Fi — data should route through Airalo eSIM.

Step 8: Abroad Activation and Monitoring

Device connects automatically on arrival. If not, try manual network selection. Monitor usage in Airalo app. Top up before running out if plan supports it. On return, switch data back to UK SIM. eSIM stays installed for future trips.

Troubleshooting

QR code will not scan

Ensure good lighting. Increase screen brightness on QR code display. Use manual entry (SM-DP+ address + activation code from Airalo app) as alternative.

Not connecting abroad

Enable Data Roaming on Airalo eSIM line. Try manual network selection. Restart device. Check Airalo coverage map for your specific location.

Balance not updating

App updates may lag up to 15 minutes. Force-refresh. Use device's built-in data monitor for real-time tracking. Contact Airalo support if discrepancy persists after 24 hours.

Installation failed

Ensure stable Wi-Fi. Update device OS. Restart and retry. Contact Airalo support if issue persists — they can reissue QR code in some cases.
